“With Liberty and Justice for All” Free Essays

An assessment of the social imbalance that exists in accordance with Gay Marriage Aimee L. Vroman Strayer University Online Introduction to Sociology SOC 100-015016 Professor Paul Humenik August 22, 2010 Abstract as of late, the discussion over same-sex marriage has developed from an issue that at times emerged in a couple of states to an across the country debate. To be sure, over the most recent five years, the discussion over gay marriage has been heard in the corridors of the U. We will compose a custom article test on â€Å"With Liberty and Justice for All† or on the other hand any comparable theme just for you Request Now S. Congress, at the White House, in many state councils and courts, and in the talk of political races at both the national and state levels. Also, the fight about whether gays and lesbians ought to be permitted to marry gives no indications of subsiding. In the most recent year alone, three states have prohibited same-sex marriage and four states have sanctioned the training. The ideal opportunity for banter is currently finished. The issue of gay marriage isn't one of strict debasement, social disintegration, or even moral breakdown. It is an issue of natural rights ensured to all residents of this nation. The way that our government doesn't perceive gay relationships is an abomination and despicable, best case scenario. â€Å"The establishment to gay rights will eventually be viewed as the option to wed, in light of the fact that with that privilege solidly settled in law, most different types of segregation couldn't be advocated. † (Bidstrup, Why Gays Should Be Allowed To Marry, 1996) When we as a general public look outwards, we see everything that we can do to enable different social orders to accomplish our degree of equity, individual and budgetary achievement, opportunities, and everything else that accompanies our insight and determination. In any case, in the event that we as a general public were to search internally at ourselves (something that I am certain that lone a little level of our general public is happy to do) and at our general public overall, would we see it from an alternate perspective? Would we see that much following fifty years of social equality and equivalent open door that we despite everything mistreat and treat a few gatherings of our general public as peasants? Our country’s Bill of Rights has been altered by Constitutional Amendments to state the every single American resident has certain basic rights. The option to be hitched is one that we Americans hold important to us. Why at that point, is this specific right denied to the gay network? One of the greatest and most intense contentions against gay marriage in this nation is that it is against God and that it is against what it says in the Bible (The Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve contention). Indeed, this nation was established on Christian standards and laws that were seen to be reasonable for the entirety of its populace. Notwithstanding, this isn't the seventeen hundreds nor is it the hour of the Inquisition. This is the alleged Modern Era, where not just innovation and fund should be updated and ever improving yet in addition cultural acknowledgment of individuals that are not quite the same as what we see as standard and the cultural standard. By what method can there be cultural equity for the gay network when we as a general public, who declare ourselves to be illuminated and ground breaking, deny even this generally fundamental of rights to the gay network? The appropriate response is straightforward; there can be no cultural equity for the gay network in this viewpoint. Imagine a scenario in which we were to reverse the situation on society and tell everybody that isn't a piece of the gay network that their relationships, common associations, and different types of organization were invalid and no longer existed according to the administration. There would be a cultural change. Rebellion would result and the administration would be destroyed by the individuals. Afterward, when the individuals had concluded that there had been sufficient disarray, changed by the individuals and for the individuals. The main explanation this has not occurred with the gay network is on the grounds that they are the minority for this situation. For a considerable length of time of our country’s history, we have been liable of persecuting and in any event, oppressing the minorities inside our general public, to avoid anything related to denying them the unavoidable rights called for in our own Constitution. After some time, those minorities that have battled and contended energetically for these rights have inevitably been managed these rights by Constitutional Amendments. However still, here we sit in the twenty-first century, we despite everything can't see past our own predispositions and our profound established feelings of trepidation of anything that is unique or in spite of us. By the day's end, our resistance to gay marriage stems at last from a profound seeded homophobia in our way of life and society, borne on the whole out of strict preference. While a significant number of us don't understand that homophobia exists to the degree that it does, it is an undeniable piece of each gay person’s life, much the same as prejudice is an undeniable piece of each African American’s life. It is there, it is unavoidable, and it has unmistakably more genuine ramifications for our general public than the greater part of us understand, for gay individuals, however for society when all is said in done. This strict partiality originates from a few notable substances. Those elements incorporate, yet are not restricted to, the Catholic Church, the Mormon Church, the American Family Association, and Focus on the Family, and the most preservationist of Protestant factions. Along with their different political auxiliary gatherings, an entire host of littler conservative political and strict associations, and a couple out-right despise gatherings, they are forming national and nearby approach towards the gay network. They burn through a huge number of dollars contorting and misshaping choices, suggestions, and other neighborhood instruments of law exclusively with the end goal of dread mongering to unnerve the people into line at the surveys. It is these sorts of strategies being utilized that are obsolete and completely wrong in the good and moral sense. They state that cash debases; well the confirmation is in the notorious pudding. The dread mongering transforms into unmatched detest and it is powered by these alleged â€Å"Christian† associations. This is in opposition to the Christian lifestyle and in spite of the feelings of a Christian. Contempt without anyone else, spruced up as strict creed has been utilized for such a long time that it is starting to lose its adequacy (in the long run individuals start to make sense of that it is generally a strategy for filling seats, assortment plates and crusade coffers more than it is a method of transforming lost spirits and improving society), so the more shrewd of these associations have started to move onto a smooth promulgation exertion dependent on that long-term most loved champ, dread (Bidstrup, Gay Marriage: The Arguments and Motives, 2009). The ideal opportunity for talk and Bible pounding is finished. Our nation had its season of strict transformation. It is currently time for each individual, paying little heed to sex, race, strict conviction, or sexual direction, to be given the rights that our laws and conventions give. This thought has been the foundation of our general public and our country for a long time. â€Å"We can't acknowledge the view that Amendment 2’s forbiddance on explicit legitimate assurances does close to deny gay people of exceptional rights. In actuality, the revision forces a unique inability on those people alone. Gay people are prohibited the shields that others appreciate or may look for without imperative. (Kennedy, Stevens, O’Connor, Souter, Ginsburg, amp; Breyer, 1996) In the Supreme Court supposition that this statement is taken from, it says doubtlessly that a state (Colorado for this situation) can't keep any gathering of people from participating in any open or private exchange. Despite the fact that this case was fervently bantered throughout the following fifteen years, Colorado in 2007 passed a law denying any victimization gay people. Presently on the off chance that one state can do this and, at that point another and afterward another, for what reason is it so difficult for our governmentally chosen authorities to do something very similar? The main answer that I can give is the activists, loathe gatherings, and church lobbyists that toss a huge number of dollars into the coffers of our Senators and Congressman. This grimy cash guarantees that by and by they will get chose and that indeed they will cast a ballot to keep the gay network as peons. This situation is inadmissible. The ideal opportunity for change is currently. Opportunity is the privilege of each American paying little mind to sex, race, strict alliance, and sexual direction. The opportunity has already come and gone that we, as a general public, stand up and state in one bound together voice, â€Å"This isn't right and we won't represent it any more! Euthymia in Bipolar Disorder

Euthymia in Bipolar Disorder Bipolar Disorder Symptoms Print Understanding Euthymia in Bipolar Disorder By Marcia Purse Marcia Purse is a mental health writer and bipolar disorder advocate who brings strong research skills and personal experiences to her writing. Learn about our editorial policy Marcia Purse Medically reviewed by Medically reviewed by Steven Gans, MD on August 05, 2016 Steven Gans, MD is board-certified in psychiatry and is an active supervisor, teacher, and mentor at Massachusetts General Hospital. Learn about our Medical Review Board Steven Gans, MD Updated on June 24, 2019 Bipolar Disorder Overview Symptoms & Diagnosis Causes Treatment Living With In Children Your Rights MoMo Productions/Getty Images Euthymia in bipolar disorder is a term used to describe a relatively stable mood state, where you are neither manic/hypomanic nor depressed. However, some dictionaries have offered variations of the definition which can be confusing when used in the context of a mental illness. To complicate matters even further, a significant number of people diagnosed with bipolar euthymia will show signs of depression or anxiety, casting into doubt as to what the term actually means. Varying Definitions The confusion in the definition of euthymia begins with the root word itself. In Greek, the prefix eu-  means good or well, while -thymia is derived from the Greek word thymus, meaning mind. This would suggest that a person in a euthymic state is in a good state of mind. Other dictionaries have expanded the definition to suggest a positive or even elevated mood state, not unlike that used to describe euphoria. When used in philosophy, in fact, euthymia describes a state of gladness, good mood, and serenity (in reference to one of the root goals of human existence). The same definition cannot be applied to medicine. When used in a clinical context, euthymia is not so much a good state as it is a neutral one in which you may neither be particularly happy nor sad. You may not even feel good per se but will at least be in a state where you are better able to function on a daily basis. With that being said, some people with euthymia will feel markedly improved. However, others will experience signs and symptoms suggestive of depression or anxiety. Euthymia and Anhedonia It is not uncommon to be diagnosed as euthymic and have symptoms of anhedonia, a mood state defined as the reduced ability to feel pleasure. Anhedonia may be experienced physically, wherein you get no pleasure from touching, eating, or sex, or socially, where you are disinterested in or unable to gain pleasure from social situations. Symptoms of anhedonia include:Withdrawing sociallyPutting on a good face for othersFinding excuses not to see people you knowHaving negative feelings about yourself or othersExpressing yourself less verbally or non-verballyLoss of sex drive (libido)A persistent feeling of physical unwellness Anhedonia is not depression per se but is rather a core symptom of depression and other mood disorders, including schizophrenia. Some people will describe anhedonia as emotional flatlining. Unfortunately, there is no consensus as to the appropriate treatment of anhedonia or any drugs that specifically target anhedonia as a condition. With that being said, people with anhedonia often benefit from increased social support as well as the combined use of antidepressant drugs and psychotherapy. Wellbutrin (bupropion), an antidepressant used to treat bipolar depression, may be useful in improving libido. Euthymia and Anxiety Euthymia and anxiety can also co-occur in people with bipolar disorder. The type and severity of anxiety symptoms can vary from person to person and may be characterized by one or several of the following disorders: AgoraphobiaGeneralized anxiety disorder (GAD)Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)Panic disorderPost-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)Social anxiety disorder (SAD) The anxiety disorder may have been pre-existing alongside bipolar disorder, or it could something that developed after (or in response) to bipolar treatment The co-existence of euthymia and anxiety disorders is not all that uncommon. In fact, according to research from the Harvard Medical School and the Douglas Mental Health University Institute in Montreal, 34.7 percent of 2,102 people who met the diagnostic criteria for bipolar euthymia also met the diagnostic criteria for one or more anxiety disorders. As opposed to anhedonia, which has no established course of treatment, anxiety disorders would be treated in line with recommendations in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) issued by the American Psychiatric Association. Cause It is unclear why some people with bipolar euthymia experience anhedonia, while others experience anxiety or no symptoms at all. In recent years, a number of psychologists have suggested that our very understanding of euthymia may be askew, wherein the absence of disease is often construed as having good mental health. This is especially true with regards to euthymia. A bipolar person in a euthymic state will often not be willing or able to alter their current mood state after the resolution of an acute manic or depressive episode. It may that he or she fears tipping the boat and has become less responsive to outside stimuli, either consciously or unconsciously. Certain treatments, such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), can also result in a blunted mood state, often temporary. Whatever the cause, the resulting inflexibility can make it difficult to adapt to various situations or sensations. Without the ability to adapt, the person will be less able to experience pleasure and have a general tendency to experience negative emotions more frequently, intensely, and readily. As such, euthymia is not necessarily an indication that a treatment has worked but is rather the state by which the course of treatment may need to be monitored and adjusted. Essay about Counter Terrorism Unit - 2699 Words

Introduction *Note: information concerning the formation of the CTU is fictional Terrorism is one of the greatest concerns of the 21st century. It is a method that has been embraced by many groups with many different ideologies. It has the potential of causing major devastation, especially with the specter of acts of nuclear, biological, and chemical terrorism. There have been many references by both the media and politicians to a â€Å"War on Terror,† and if we are to characterize this as a war, it is a war with an ill-defined and changing enemy, no front lines, and a war that is fraught with moral dilemmas. We must regain our strength and influence in our homelands. You must rebuild the strength of your organizations, both in terms of men and money and in terms of operational capacity and reach. However, you must also be creative and take the fight back to the enemy’s lands. For too long they have sat in safety as they bomb our lands and invade us from afar. It is time for their populations to feel the costs of war as we have felt it for decades. There are many weaknesses to be exploited and avenues of approach. The Best Way to Build Your Writing Portfolio

Okay. You know what you want. You want to be a freelance writer. Youve done your research and you know this is the creative outlet you need and help you quit your 9-5 job for good! But, now, you have no clue what to do to get started. Do you pitch first? Do you start a blog? With anything new, there will be different ways to get to the same end goal. For me, I had absolutely no experience writing for businesses or being online. Sure, I went to Facebook or Pinterest, but I did that for personal reasons, not to market something. I didnt know what to do or how to do it once I realized I wanted to freelance write. I made mistakes in the beginning too and had to learn the hard way what tools I needed to start freelance writing. But, Im here telling you what you do need first. You need a writing portfolio. This is a sample of your writing in the niche you want to get paid for. Oh, dear. Did I open up a can of worms when I talked about a niche Technically you need to have a niche to write samples, but its not required. A prospect typically wont hire you unless they have read your writing in the niche they require. You can click the image below to view it better. A recent inquiry let me know that they read my samples on my site. My samples told them that they liked my style and wanted to hire me this year. Having a solid writing portfolio filled with your best writing can really make or break you as a writer trying to make this a business. So, lets dive into all of this and see what the best way is to build your portfolio. A Writing Portfolio Example There are many ways you can display your freelance writer portfolio. Its typically a page on your writer website. While you can just add links to your Portfolio page, its much more attracting if you use a plugin. In my course, Writer Website in a Weekend, I show you how to install a plugin for your portfolio: To me, this is the most professional way to display your portfolio to potential clients. What Type of Content to Use in Your Freelance Writing Portfolio So, do you only put blog posts in your writing portfolio? No. You put the type of content you want to get paid for. This might mean sample emails, mock-ups of white papers, site content for an About page or a blog post. I typically write blog content, so my portfolio is made up of blog content. I also think this is the easiest type of content to create and to market for your business. You can land regular work as a freelance blog writer. But, should you just draft up samples in Google doc or is there a better way to build your portfolio? Yes!! Do This to Build Your Writing Portfolio The best way to create a sample for your freelance portfolio is to guest post. This means your post is published on someone elses blog. It can be  paid contributions, but more often than not, its a free opportunity for you to market your business  in front of a brand new targeted audience. Guest posting also gives you the street cred as a professional freelance writer. My first three samples were not really in my niche, nor were they at all related to each other. The first was for A Nation of Moms. I wrote about gut health for toddlers. I thought natural health would be a good niche to get into. My second was for Social Media Today. This post is in my portfolio currently because it has helped me break into the digital marketing niche – the niche I currently write in. Free Course on Getting Paid to Write Online Finally, the third sample was for Psych Central on how to improve your mood. I was ecstatic for this sample as it was on a very prestigious platform, even though I wasnt sure I wanted to write about mental health. As you can see, not defining a niche didnt stop me from writing about things I knew – natural health, mental health and social media (the last one I was learning at the time and wanted to write about it). So, how do you guest post? 1. Run a Google Search The easiest is to run a Google search on the niche you want to write for + write for us. Here is an example of dog blogs! You can search for literally anything + write for us to get guest blog opportunities. 2. Read The Guest Blogs Guidelines Every place you guest blog will have a different set of guidelines to submit your post. Some may want a Google doc while others want you to send an attachment via email. There may be strict rules on what types of links to include, who you can mention in your post and how to write your post and the length of the post. Here are Brazens guest guidelines. 3. Create Your Guest Blog Pitch Now comes the fun part – crafting your pitch based on the guidelines you just read! Again, different blogs want different things. Some want 3-5 topic suggestions while others want an outline of one post idea. Figure out what they want and come up with a great topic or list of topics. Here is my pitch for A Nation of Moms: I suggest you research how to craft a pitch for guest blogging. Its important that your pitch comes off personal and sounds like you know the bloggers content. Simply using a template for your guest pitch, wont work in landing any guest posts. Instead, read the blog you want to guest post and learn about: How long their posts are The format for their posts Their popular high sharing topics Their headlines This information can help you stand out in your pitch. The blog owner will know you did your research. 4. Write the Guest Post When you get accepted, its time to write the guest post. One thing to note – dont pitch the SAME topic and outline to multiple guest blogs. If you pitch the steps to eat paleo to five health blogs and two of them accept your pitch, you cant write that post. And you cant swap another idea either. Instead, think of similar blog topics to pitch. So, for the health example, if you want to guest post on a health site, come up with several ideas that can be similar if you have a hard time coming up with blog topics: 5 Steps to Get Your Family Eating Paleo Why Paleo Eating Isnt Just a Fad 25 Easy Paleo Snacks to Take on The Run 5 Easy Ways You Can Start Eating Paleo 5. Executive Action Versus Presidential Orders

Executive Action Versus Presidential Orders The use of executive actions by the president of the United States came under intense scrutiny during Barack Obamas two terms in office. But many critics misunderstood the definition of executive actions and the difference with legally binding executive orders.   Obama issued  dozens of executive actions designed to prevent gun violence in January 2016, fulfilling one of his primary agenda items. Many of the media reports mistakenly described the policy proposals as official executive orders, which are legally binding directives from the president to federal administrative agencies. The Obama administration, however, described the proposals as executive actions. And those executive actions- ranging from universal background checks on anyone trying to buy guns, restoring a ban on military-style assault weapons, and cracking down on straw purchases of guns by people whose intention is to resell them to criminals- carried none of the weight executive orders carry. The following explains what executive actions are and how they compare to executive orders. Executive Actions Versus Executive Orders Executive actions are any informal proposals or moves by the president. The term executive action itself is vague and can be used to describe almost anything the president calls on Congress or his administration to do. But many  executive actions carry no legal weight. Those that do actually set policy can be invalidated by the courts or undone by legislation passed by Congress. The terms executive action and executive order are not interchangeable. Executive orders are legally binding and published in the Federal Register, though they also can be reversed by the courts and Congress. A good way to think of executive actions is a wish list of policies the president would like to see enacted. When Executive Actions Are Used Instead of Executive Orders Presidents favor the use of nonbinding executive actions when the issue is controversial or sensitive. For example, Obama carefully weighed his use of executive actions on gun violence and decided against issuing legal mandates via executive orders, which would have gone against the legislative intent of Congress and risked enraging lawmakers of both parties. Executive Actions Versus Executive Memoranda Executive actions are also different from executive memoranda. Executive memoranda are similar to executive orders in that they carry legal weight  allowing the president to direct government officials and agencies. But executive memoranda are typically not published in the Federal Register unless the president determines the rules have general applicability and legal effect. Use of Executive Actions by Other Presidents Obama was the first modern president to use executive actions in lieu of executive orders or executive memoranda. Criticism of Executive Actions Critics described Obamas use of executive actions as an overreach of his presidential powers and an unconstitutional attempt to bypass the legislative branch of government, even though the most substantial of the executive actions carried no legal weight. Some conservatives described Obama as a dictator or tyrant and said he was acting imperial. U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, a Republican from Florida who was a  presidential candidate in the 2016 election, said Obama was abusing his power by imposing his policies via executive fiat instead of allowing them to be debated in Congress. Republican National Committee Chairman and former White House Chief of Staff for President Donald Trump, Reince Priebus, called Obamas use of executive actions as an executive power grab. Said Priebus: He paid lip service to our fundamental constitutional rights, but took actions that disregard the 2nd Amendment and the legislative process. Representative government is meant to give voice to the people; President Obama’s unilateral executive action ignores this principle. But even the Obama White House acknowledged that most of the executive actions carried no legal weight. Heres what the administration said at the time the 23 executive actions were proposed: While President Obama will sign 23 Executive Actions today that will help keep our kids safe, he was clear that he cannot and should not act alone: The most important changes depend on Congressional action.

Doryphoros and Augustus of Prima Porta Assignment

Doryphoros and Augustus of Prima Porta - Assignment Example The second style is a portrayal of actual Roman attributes with full body adornment and symbolizing authority. 2. Line- is used in Doryphoros and Augustus of Prima Porta to define the male body in its most proportional form; this is because this element is used to determine its size and shape (Janson & Janson, 2003). It is used to outline full body shape and curvatures while also defining the postures of the objects under study. Shape- In both the sculptures, the shapes come out because the sculptors divided the human body into different parts. They then designed all these and made sure they are proportionate when assembled into a whole. Texture and Balance- The images have a fine balance between relaxation and tension because of their postures; that creates harmony. The shades fade off very gently from one color code to the next making the balance and texture very clear; however, they have a simulated texture which makes the objects poses real textures. This is seen for instance in Augustine’s clothing and adornments. 3. The objects have a subject the sculptors wanted to pass across; The Doryphoros is a symbolism of male beauty with balanced body parts. Augustus of Prima Porta is a sculpture made by Tiberius in recognition of his father’s role in protecting their empire. 5. The artist message when making Doryphoros is a portrayal of a perfect male; this is coupled with nakedness which symbolizes civility thus bringing out a contrast with Greek’s backward neighbors. Augustus is personified as being a perfect ruler of the Roman Empire (Janson & Janson, 2003). He does this by giving him features of both strength and agility. He is compared to the powerful Greek gods as he wields authority which was essential in ruling the expansive empire and protecting it from foreign occupation.

Marketing Plan - Coursework Example The country is however besieged by rising unemployment. UK witnessed five days of social unrest and riots in August of 2011which resulted in loss of reputation and goodwill for the country (Internet Business News 2011). The rate of change of technology impacts the UK automobile sector considerably. All players in the industry have to keep abreast of the latest technologies and incorporate them in the subsequent models of automobiles. The growth of internet has provided the automobile industry a new sales and communication channel. At the same time, it has provided the consumer an extremely powerful tool to compare and contrast not only the prices of automobiles, but also their specifications and features. The UK government initiated a ‘scrappage incentive scheme’, wherein a car buyer was given  £1,000 trade-in incentive for replacing a 10 year old vehicle with a new, more efficient car. This scheme helped boost sales, but of smaller vehicles and not the likes of BMW (Reed 2009). The government is also giving incentives to buyers to opt for alternative-fuel vehicles (AFVs). Walter Van Tilburg Clark’s The Portable Phonograph Essay -- essays res

Walter Van Tilburg Clark’s â€Å"The Portable Phonograph,† In Walter Van Tilburg Clark’s â€Å"The Portable Phonograph,† the author makes setting play a major role in understanding the action of the characters within the story. Clark, a writer and an English Professor, lived from 1909 to 1971. During that time, he lived through both World Wars at a relatively young age, which may have influenced this story. Clark has excellent use of setting to make the atmosphere needed and set the proper mood, so this story is credible. To accomplish this, Clark orients the reader to a unique place and time by use of the physical setting and human possessions, and uses symbolism to create a mood that gives the reader insight to how the characters must feel in their surroundings.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In order to understand the behavior and actions of the four characters in this story, the author must describe the place physical place and time where the four characters must survive. The perception of this environment is crucial for the actions of the characters to be appropriate. Clark describes some sights in this decimated prairie, â€Å"The frozen mud still bore the toothed impress of great tanks, and a wanderer on the neighboring undulations might have stumbled, in this light, into large, partially filled-in and weed-grown cavities, their banks channeled and beginning to spread into badlands. These pits were such as might have been made by falling meteors, but they were not. They were scars ...

A Mutable Self

Haley Wiedenman English 101 Brit Ashley 4/8/11 When reading â€Å"A Mutable Self†, by Mary Catherine Bateson, I am forced to analyze why I am myself. For several years I have stubbornly believed that I have become myself by myself alone and have not been influenced by the things and people around me. I didn’t want to admit that I am in fact tightly connected to people of my past and they have influenced who I am greatly. Bateson makes it clear in her writing that â€Å"no one –fetus, child, or adult- is independent of the actions and imaginations of others. Though we have the power to alter ourselves, the fact that we do so because the influence of others proves that we can never break the connection of the people who we have been subject to, making us somewhat dependent of those around us. Bateson brings this subject to our attention to spread an awareness of how we come to be under the influence of others. Not only does she inform us of the ways of ourselves b ut also she enlightens the reader of cultures around the globe.Taking in this information has the potential to change readers view and allow them to have a greater understanding of the world around them. In opening this door Bateson is creating a continual awareness that will aid the reader in their daily life though the understanding of themselves and others. On the contrary to popular belief, Bateson has faith that â€Å"the self is learned, yet ironically it often becomes a barrier to learning. The way that I perceive this is that we often are so stubborn with the views of ourselves that we deny any opposing views given by others, which in turn blocks our access to further knowledge. Once we have an idea in our head about a certain thing, it is often difficult to persuade us otherwise. In the works of Bateson she writes a personal story about her visit to an Iranian kindergarten. In her visit the teacher allowed a period for drawing time to the students. At the end of there time the teacher went to each student, collected the drawing pencils, and threw away each of there creations.I come from a home where my first piece of art I brought home remains framed in our living room. So, to me, it is extremely sad that these children are not rewarded for their creative efforts. Instead of a high five and gold star on our artwork, these small children just watch as their masterpieces fall into a trashcan. The difference between Iranian culture and my own is huge. Though I am sure they have there own motives for their ways, I personally am glad I grew up in a home where I was praised for my hard work.Even though I enjoyed reading this essay, I do believe there are a few things Bateson could have done my successfully. Her writing is a bit repetitive, which I suppose is an effective way to make your point clear, however it can also make the reading a bit dull from time to time. Another item she could have improved on is her connection to the reader. Many of her exampl es where of other cultures, and while this may be extremely interesting, it does not relate to the most the people who will be reading this essay. It could have been more triumphant if Bateson would have both related to the common reader and added other cultural insight. Connections between the Essays: 1- The self is ever changing – pg. 252 What is the Self? & pg. 272 A mutable Self 2- People and culture around you shape the self – pg. 261 What is the Self? & pg. 269-270 A Mutable Self Questions 1- Can we disconnect ourselves from our family/community to become independent and find our true selves? Reasons why Bilingual Education Is not Appropriate for Public Schools Free Essay Example, 1750 words

The potential disadvantages of bilingual education can be assessed from its impact on the US educational system as a case study. Bilingual education was introduced in the US educational system fundamentally to provide the children from immigrated communities with an opportunity to speak, read and write the language of the locals. In the start of its implementation in the schools in the US, it was deemed necessary to let the children attain education solely in their own respective languages for at least 3 years, so that they may be able to make the foundations of their education After that period, the system required to transition into the bilingual setup. The idea was heavily criticized as it surfaced because many thought that the provision of separate mentors as per the linguistic needs of different children would serve to enhance the gap between the immigrated children and the local ones. Also, there was great verisimilitude that the children would encounter great difficulty shift ing from unilingual to the bilingual educational system after expiry of the said period, and this might affect their academic performance.
